The Mutable Colors & Names of Things is a collection of writing that explores the confusion, curiosity, grief, love, and anguish that accompanies the loss of a loved one, in this case, my father. Compounded by complicated and painful family history, this work attempts to make sense of the senseless, the ancestral— what’s hidden. In conversation with other writers, MC&NT draws from the works of Inger Christensen, Yi-Fu Tuan, Etel Adnan, among others, as well as, touch points of science, culture, and etymology. As found in “A Memoir”—

Here is a well / a basket / to crawl / into / Here is a cup / it’s empty / and it yearns

Windows glow / expect

I cry again / in the grocery store / restocking the coffee / even though / I do not work there / I commit / an act / so natural / to my own thought / yet unequivocally / endowed to me / by my father / This is his (other) behavior / Genuine care / for the item / regardless of anyone / else’s / presence / The Principle of Minimum Energy / means / you toss a stone / into water / ripples form / the water spreads / quickly / to return / to a still surface / everything / seeks / a state / of as little energy output as possible / He returns to himself / just so / like a river against a river
